What are tooth fillings?

Tooth decay damages teeth and affects your overall dental health. These cavities are diagnosed during your regular dental exams. A tooth filling (cavity filling) is used to repair tooth decay and restore the tooth back to its normal function.

During your visit, one of our highly experienced dentists will remove the decay, leaving only healthy tooth structure. From there, they will then fill the affected area with tooth colored filling material. If decay is left untreated, it may damage the nerve of the tooth and need to be treated with a root canal.

Replacing Metal Fillings

You may be unhappy with the appearance of the silver-mercury fillings in your mouth.  But did you know that your old fillings are also a health concern and can lead to tooth loss?  Not only are there serious questions about how silver-mercury tooth fillings affect your overall health, but over time, old tooth fillings leak, which can leading to cavities forming underneath them.  This will cause serious damage to the structure of your teeth, leading to cracked teeth and/or the need for root canal treatment. Silver-mercury fillings can also leach into gum tissue, causing permanent staining of the gums, also known as “amalgam tattoos.” This is why Bridgewater Dental Centre offers the highest quality, metal-free, tooth colored restorations.

Lasting Results

Tooth Fillings are highly durable and will last many years, however they may need to be replaced over time. As with all dental procedures, proper home care and regular dental cleaning visits will help prolong the life of your new dental tooth fillings.
