Introduction

If you suspect you have a tooth abscess please call Bridgewater Dental Centre for all your emergency dental needs.

An abscessed tooth is first indicated by severe, persistent tooth pain. It is more complicated than a simple toothache and requires immediate attention. If you suspect that your tooth may be infected, please contact Bridgewater Dental Centre for an exam.

What is a Tooth Abscess?

An abscessed tooth is a tooth that has an infection originating within the inner pulp chamber. This infection spreads down towards the root of the tooth and the tooth loses it ability to fight off infection. Bacteria from the infection continues to grow and can cause pain and swelling.

What causes a Tooth Abscess?

One of the most common causes of a tooth abscess is severe tooth decay. When a cavity becomes large and reaches the pulp chamber, an inflammatory process takes place within the tooth. This infection is first felt as a tooth ache and may ache on and off for a few days. If caught early, often this infection can be fixed with a root canal. If infection goes untreated, the pulp can become necrotic (dead) and the infection can spread out of the tooth roots and into the surrounding tissues and bones.
